- BB Die State II. A visually appealing example of both the type and BB number that will garner much attention from bidders. Sharply defined from an ideally centered impression, both sides retain nearly complete strike detail in the absence of all but trivial high point friction. Areas of antique silver compete with gently mottled pewter and sandy-gray patina that appears to drift toward the right obverse and left reverse borders. The surfaces have a curious matte-like texture that accuracy compels us to mention, and there is also chalky residue nestled in among many of the design elements, especially on the reverse. With no sizeable or otherwise significant marks, however, the in-hand appearance is pleasingly smooth.
BB-167 is only a median rarity among 1799 silver dollar die parings in an absolute sense, but at the assigned grade level the present example is rare and qualifies as Condition Census per the listing in the 2013 edition of Q. David Bowers' Encyclopedia of United States Silver Dollars: 1794-1804. It is also the plate coin for the BB-167 dies in that reference.
