- Offered is the single finest Proof 1903 half eagle evaluated by both PCGS and CAC in the non-Cameo category. It is a highly attractive Superb Gem with vivid golden-wheat coloration throughout. Both sides are fully struck, with razor sharp detail to even the most intricate design elements. A modest satin texture blankets the design elements, especially those on the reverse, further enhancing the already breathtaking eye appeal.<p>The Philadelphia Mint struck 154 Proof half eagles in 1903, one of the more generous totals for the type. However, perhaps only 110 pieces survive from this mintage, and no more than a couple of dozen show Gem preservation or better. The present specimen is among the most impressive survivors of the issue, a top-tier condition rarity with no peers at either PCGS or CAC without advancing into the certified Cameo category. Its offering in this sale represents an important opportunity for the advanced connoisseur of Proof type coins or Liberty Head gold.
