- One of the finest and most visually appealing examples of the Proof 1907 Liberty Head half eagle issue that your cataloger (JLA) has ever handled. The surfaces are wonderfully original in preservation with a full endowment of warm honey-rose color. Boasting an uncommon degree of field to device contrast, the Cameo designation from PCGS is significant for an issue produced using dies that imparted minimal frost to the motifs. Fully struck and expertly preserved, this beautiful Gem Cameo Proof will impress even the most discerning collectors.
The 1907 is the final Proof issue in the long running Liberty Head half eagle series that began in 1839. (The Philadelphia Mint produced only circulation strikes of this type in 1908, before transitioning to the new Indian design.) The mintage is a scant 92 pieces, one of the lowest among 20th century Proof Liberty Head half eagles. Survivors are rare and, per PCGS CoinFacts, number only 60 to 75 pieces, an estimate that is mirrored by John W. Dannreuther in his 2018 reference on United States Mint Proof coinage. Additionally, many examples are impaired with noticeable hairlines and other blemishes, with the result that the 1907 is not only elusive in an absolute sense, but is one of the more challenging late date Proof Liberty Head half eagles to locate in high grades. With precious few survivors grading finer than Proof-64, and no grading events in the PCGS, NGC or CACG Deep/Ultra Cameo category, we anticipate strong competition for this exceptional condition rarity from the Stack Collection.
