- Both sides of this New Orleans Mint half eagle retain full mint luster in a rich frosty to semi-reflective finish. Originally preserved in a blend of golden-orange and deep honey colors. Struck from an earlier state of these dies, the detail is razor sharp to full in all areas. Carefully preserved and free of even a single distracting blemish, there is not much separating this lovely example from a Gem Mint State designation.<p>Mintage for this variety of the 1843-O half eagle is believed to be 82,000 coins, versus just under 20,000 pieces for the scarcer Small Letters variety. The Large Letters type is most often found in grades of EF and lower, making the present offering of an upper end and attractive Choice Mint State coin a significant opportunity for Liberty Head gold specialists.
