Lot Description

This superior quality example offers uncommonly sharp detail for the type with emerging to bold detail to the hair behind Washington's brow, all other features razor sharp to full. Frosty to semi-reflective surfaces are warmly toned in autumn-orange and olive-brown, direct lighting calls forth not only vivid powder blue undertones, but also hints of faded mint color on the reverse around the eagle's head and along the tops of its wings. Just a few wispy, easily overlooked handling marks are all that separate this lovely piece from a Gem Mint State grade. This popular Washington type was produced in England as part of a bid to secure a coinage contract from the United States Congress. While many examples that were shipped to America eventually found their way into circulation, many Mint State examples such as this were preserved by collectors and others in England.
