1857-O Liberty Quarter Eagle. Winter Variety One, the only known dies. AU-50 (PCGS). CAC. 1899 Liberty Quarter Eagle. MS-62 Cameo (PCGS). The New Orleans Mint quarter eagle series passed into history in 1857 with a mintage of just 34,000 pieces. This is actually one of the more readily obtainable O-mint coins of this denomination, but it is rarer than the 1839-O, 1843-O Small Date and 1854-O in all grades. Wonderful originality (!) in a pre-Civil War Southern gold coin, both sides exhibit a rich olive-khaki "skin" to the surfaces. Characteristic softness to the reverse highpoints aside, this coin is well struck, and the obverse is overall sharp. With only light wear and no individually distracting abrasions, this is certainly a PQ '57-O at the AU level of preservation.
