This otherwise boldly defined VG example shows uneven wear on the obverse that has left the upper periphery softer than elsewhere. The word LIBERTY and the surrounding stars are still appreciable, nonetheless, the date at opposite border is sharp and clear, and the reverse has a well balanced appearance for the assigned grade. Golden-gray obverse toning yields to lighter silver gray on the reverse, both sides with deeper steel or russet outlines to many of the peripheral features. A light carbon spot on Liberty's bust is noted, although no sizeable or otherwise significant marks are seen. Most readily obtainable of the four known die marriages of the 1797 Draped Bust half dime, LM-1 is the only 15 Stars variety for the issue. The obverse die was certainly created before the admission of Tennessee to the Union as the 16th state during the summer of 1796. Given the scarcity of all early U.S. Mint silver coins with original, problem free surfaces, this coin will appeal to both type collectors and specialists in Draped Bust silver.
