Lot Description
The obverse and reverse designs are the same that the Mint used to strike regular issue 1875 Liberty Head half eagles. This boldly rendered pattern half eagle showcases highly frosted silver-gray motifs set against deeply mirrored fields. The devices are as sharp as ever seen for the design type, aided no doubt by the softness of the aluminum planchet.
The uspatterns.com website notes: "Although described as regular dies trial pieces, these were more likely deliberately struck for sale to collectors as part of complete sets." The same site reports that Saul Teichman has confirmed only two specimens of Judd-1442:
1 - PCGS Proof-66 Deep Cameo. Ex New England Rare Coin Auctions' 1979 ANA Auction, July-August, lot 1347; Heritage's Dallas and Newport Beach, CA Sale of June 1987, lot 4594; Superior's Lee Collection and the Peter L. Shaffer Collection sale, September 1988, lot 5155; Superior's Jascha Heifetz Collection Sale, October 1989, lot 3376; Heritage's Long Beach Signature Sale of May 2003, lot 6443; Simpson Collection; Heritage's FUN Signature Auction of January 2022, lot 3842. The present example.
2 - NGC Proof-66 Ultra Cameo. Ex our sale of the Exemplar Collection, August 2013 Chicago ANA Auction, lot 4404.
In addition to its own awesome rarity, this off-metal striking is of even further desirability given the rarity of the regular issue Philadelphia Mint 1875 Liberty Head half eagle, of which only 20 Proofs and 200 circulation strikes were made in gold. A fantastic bidding opportunity for the advanced pattern or Liberty Head gold collector.
