- Lot Description
- Vividly toned surfaces exhibit silver-lilac centers framed in copper-orange and cobalt-blue peripheral colors, the entire package backlit by iridescent champagne-pink and powder blue iridescence. Fully struck and brilliant in finish, this piece is far more attractive than the typically encountered survivor of this challenging and underrated issue.<p>The 1873 is the premier Proof in the Trade dollar series. Researcher Harry X Boosel uncovered internal Mint records that showed an output of 865 pieces. The date in Proof is considerably rarer than many of its compatriots of the era, especially the Proof-only issues of 1878 to 1883. Since most are found in grades of Proof-63 and lower, this premium quality near-Gem specimen with CAC approval is a truly significant offering.
