- Grellman Die State a. Sharp early state for these dies, the lines on the reverse over the letters MER in AMERICA are clear, the borders on both sides are crisp, and all major design elements are sharply to fully rendered. Both sides show abundant rose-red mint color with light, mottled, gray-brown iridescence that is most extensive in the center of the reverse. A few faint marks on and around Liberty's portrait and traces of light carbon in areas account for the MS-63 numeric grade from PCGS, but none of these blemishes are either significant or individually distracting. In the 2021 edition of his reference The Die Varieties of United States Large Cents: 1840-1857, Bob Grellman accounts for only 10 Mint State survivors from these dies, four of which have a significant amount of mint red, as here.
