1787 Machin's Mills Halfpenny. Vlack 21-87D, W-7970. Rarity-4. GEORGIVS III, Group. EF-40 BN (NGC). Blended golden-brown and olive-copper patina provides a pleasing appearance for this significant example. Peripheral detail is soft to absent, although the central design elements are bold, and most of the lettering on the obverse is at least partially discernible. Tiny pits, wispy marks and a few faint pin scratches are evident only under magnification, the in hand appearance quite smooth for a circulated copper of this type. According to Jack Howes, who maintains a personal census of Machin's Mills halfpence, this coin is CC#6 for the Vlack 21-87D variety. Provenance: Ex Michael K. Ringo; Gary Trudgen.
