- Simply put, this is one of the most challenging Morgan dollar issues to locate with strong eye appeal. Most Mint State survivors from this 11,875,000-piece delivery are poorly struck with noticeably blunt high point detail in the centers. As well, the 1889-O is very rare in properly graded PL and DMPL. Wayne Miller's comments in his Morgan and Peace Dollar Textbook were written prior to the advent of third-party certification, and can be discounted in today's market. The 1889-O is neither simply a "popular" issue nor an "overrated" one with a prooflike finish - it is highly elusive in all grades as confirmed by grading events recorded in the PL and DMPL categories on the PCGS Population Report. With a sharp to full strike and strong field to device contrast on both sides, this brilliant beauty also delivers uncommonly smooth surfaces that border on full Gem Mint State quality. A find for the specialized DMPL Morgan dollar collector, and worthy of the strongest bids.
