- The United States Mint at Philadelphia struck just 50 Proofs of this denomination in 1867, and survivors are thought to number 25 to 30 coins per PCGS CoinFacts. Writing in 2018, however, John W. Dannreuther takes a more conservative view with an estimate of just 14 to 16 pieces extant. Regardless of which range is closer to the truth, this is obviously a rare issue, as one would expect from the Proof three-dollar gold series. This is only our fourth offering for the date in recent decades, and it is particularly intriguing as a lightly circulated or numismatically mishandled piece. Light hairlines, some glossiness to the texture and a touch of haziness are all noted for accuracy, but appreciable remnants of the Proof finish are noted for generally bright olive-gold surfaces.
