Lot Description

113.3 grains. An above average specimen of the scarce and challenging Small Date variety of the 1785 Nova Constellatio copper. Deep brown surfaces show even, if light granularity. The design motifs are well defined with the eye at the center of the obverse - always softly defined on examples of this variety - actually showing a significant amount of detail. A linear flaw under the letter C in CONSTELLATIO is noted but appears as struck, tiny rim nick outside the letter J in JUSTITIA. This is the real key variety in the series, if one excludes the imitation 1786 issue, one that typically comes worn, impaired and/or with limited eye appeal.
