- Outstanding quality for this low mintage issue produced during the penultimate year of the long-running Liberty Seated quarter series. This premium Superb Gem Uncirculated coin delivers attractive and undeniable originality in the form of vivid toning. Iridescent powder blue decorates the borders and gives way to softer pinkish-rose and golden-apricot shades toward the centers. Fully lustrous and sharply struck, both sides are also remarkably smooth and well preserved for an issue that is rarely encountered any finer than basal MS-67.<p>The Treasury Department was still releasing stocks of backdated quarters hoarded and exported during the Civil War and Reconstruction eras when the Philadelphia Mint delivered a mere 80,000 circulation strikes of this denomination in 1890. This issue was largely unneeded at the time and many Mint State examples were preserved by contemporary numismatists. As related above, however, precious few of those that have come down to the present day have been certified finer than MS-67. With CAC approval at the PCGS MS-67+ level, the present offering is for a phenomenal condition rarity that ranks among the finest Mint State 1890 quarters known.
