- This breathtakingly beautiful Proof 1876 quarter eagle combines satiny devices with deeply mirrored fields, although a deserved Cameo designation is of course not included on the Generation 3.0 PCGS insert. The surfaces are predominantly smooth and present as virtually pristine in most viewing situations. A full strike and warm, vivid rose-gold color further enhance the appeal of this remarkable absolute and condition rarity.<p>Like its identically dated Proof gold dollar counterpart, the Proof 1876 quarter eagle has the highest mintage in its series from 1868 through 1880. Even so, survivors from the mintage of 45 Proofs are highly elusive and, per John W. Dannreuther (2018), number only 20 to 25 coins across the numismatic grading spectrum. The premium near-Gem specimen offered here is among the finest seen by PCGS, and the second highest graded specimen in the non-Cameo category to secure CAC approval. It is destined to serve as a highlight in an advanced collection of classic Proof gold coinage.
