- Lot Description
- Rich peripheral toning in steel-blue rings the reverse but is confined to the upper border on the obverse. Lighter reddish-gold iridescence elsewhere yields to brilliance in the centers, the obverse the brighter of the two sides. Both are lustrous and boldly struck with an expectably smooth appearance for the assigned grade. Barber dime production at the New Orleans Mint in 1897 was quite limited with a total of only 666,000 coins struck. This is a challenging issue to collect that is quite underrated in Mint State. The 1897-O is actually rarer in high grades than the lower mintage 1903-S, 1904-S, 1913-S and 1915-S. It becomes scarce in MS-64 and rare at and above MS-65.
