Lot Description

1842-D Liberty Half Eagle. Winter 7-E. Small Date. VF-25 (NGC). Richly toned in olive-khaki patina, this coin presents very well for a moderately worn Dahlonega Mint Five. There are no individually mentionable abrasions, and the devices are suitably bold from what appears to have been a well-executed strike. The 1842-D Small Date ranks 18th in overall rarity among the 26 issues in the Dahlonega Mint Half Eagle series (this assessment per Doug Winter, 2003).
