Lot Description
As the single finest certified Mint State 1880 silver dollar known to PCGS, the significance of this offering for advanced specialists in the Morgan series cannot be overstated. It is a gorgeous Superb Gem with brilliant, fully lustrous surfaces in a satin to softly frosted texture. Fully struck and virtually pristine, to see this coin in hand is to admire it for both its technical quality and eye appeal.<p>The Philadelphia Mint struck 12,600,000 silver dollars for theoretic commercial use in 1880. Those that were not melted pursuant to the 1918 Pittman Act were distributed from Treasury Department stocks largely during the 1940s and 1950s. While many of the coins included in these disbursements found their way into circulation, most were preserved in Mint State by dealers and other numismatists. Today, however, original Mint-sealed are all but unknown, Uncirculated examples widely dispersed and usually appearing in the market individually or in small groups. As above, that offered here is the single finest known to PCGS - an unrivalled and unsurpassed condition rarity that will see spirited bidding.
