- Lot Description
- Struck from the regular issue dies of the 1863 Indian cent, in medallic alignment. This is a beautiful Gem that reveals both reflective tendencies in the fields and iridescent undertones of antique gold and powder blue iridescence as the otherwise tobacco-brown surfaces dip into a light. The motifs are fully impressed with a soft satin texture. According to Rick Snow (2014), the Mint struck approximately 300 examples of this type between October and December 1863. Judd-299 is one of several popular transitional Indian cent patterns, in this case employing the same design as the regular issue 1864 Bronze without the designer's initial L on the ribbon. It's primary purpose, however, was as a metallurgical trial.
