S-166. An R-1 variety that is easily identifiable by the large, arching die break on the reverse. Pleasing medium brown surfaces show some steely glossiness that brings out the nicely struck devices. The surfaces are generally smooth and free from any distracting marks or planchet issues. PCGS 31, NGC 12. For a die marriage that is so prolific, we have only been able to trace a handful of AU55s going back to 2000! The most recent one sold for $4,230 in a weak 2016 FUN auction--the one before that was in September 2006 selling for $8,625. For all 2nd Hair Style varieties, the most recent PCGS AU55 was the Reynolds S-173, which sold for $4,700 when re-offered in June 2017 and the CU value is $5,150.
