1868 Silver Three-Cent Piece. Proof-66 Cameo (NGC). This target-toned beauty is dressed in iridescent colors of gold, cobalt blue and pinkish-apricot. The toning is light enough that a boldly cameoed finish is readily apparent as the surfaces rotate under a light. The Guide Booksuggests a Proof mintage for the date of 600 pieces, though that figure probably refers to silver Proof sets and may not take into account pieces sold individually. While about 550 remain from this original mintage, just about 180 of these are known at the Gem level. This superior Cameo example ranks among the finest certified survivors.
