Lot Description

Tompkins Die Stage 1/5. A second 1794 of the Overton-101 dies from the Dean Oakes Family Collection, this VG represents the terminal state of the reverse die with a crack through the letter F in OF that bends sharply to the left and extends into the field toward the final letter S in STATES. This piece has a pleasing circulated cameo appearance with deeply toned antique gold and steel gray fields contrasting lighter design elements in old coin gray. The border denticulation at lower right obverse is indistinct, but this is the only mentionable lack of detail on surfaces that otherwise host universally bold definition at the assigned grade level. A few faint marks at central obverse require magnification to fully discern, the in-hand appearance quite smooth overall.
