- Tompkins Die Stage Die Stage 1/4, Rea et al. Die State d, Rarity-8. The Browning-8 is by far the rarest of the 10 die pairings known for the 1806-dated Draped Bust quarter issue. This variety shares its obverse with the 1806 B-6, B-7 and B-10, which die is identifiable by a perfect letter T in LIBERTY with the adjacent R higher at its base. The reverse of the 1806 B-8 is unknown in any other pairing, on which the stem touches the C in the denomination, this letter with repunching at lower left. Such is the rarity of this variety that even VG-10 examples are included in the 2010 Rea-Peterson-Karoleff-Kovach census.
The coin offered here is of even greater significance due to the die state. It represents Die State d, as defined in the Rea et al. reference, with a prominent reverse cud break at the border outside the digits 25 in the denomination and the letters UN in UNITED. This is a Rarity-8 die state, with only three examples known. This is a wholesome, well circulated coin with originally toned surfaces in pewter and silver gray. Wear is heavy, as expected for the assigned grade, yet evenly distributed on the reverse, and heavier only along the left border on the obverse. Most design elements remain bold, where allowed by strike. Really a nice piece at the assigned grade level, as confirmed by CAC approval, and of the utmost importance for series specialists. The PCGS/CAC VG-10 of this die state in our June 2025 sale of the NorthEast Collection realized $13,200.
