1853-D Liberty Quarter Eagle. AU-55 (NGC). This is a rare date with a low original production of 3,178 coins and fewer than 100 known survivors. The typical 1853-D is found in Extremely Fine condition, and AU examples are very scarce. This piece is typically struck and softly defined on the obverse center, the lower reverse denticles, and the eagle's legs and talons. Still quite lustrous, however, with no heavy marks or distractions on either side.
