Called "Uncirculated" by Hillyer Ryder and "Uncirculated. Best we have offered" by Thomas Elder, this is an extraordinary example of this issue. Rich yellow gold with abundant if subtle traces of orange, coppery toning. Graded with technical accuracy, this piece shows just the merest whisper of friction. The lively cartwheel electrifies some of the greenish undertones typical on nice, original examples of this coinage, and some areas of the peripheries flash with light reflectivity. Only trivial hairlines and minuscule marks are seen, none worthy of individual mention. The eye appeal of this piece matches its lofty grade, with both about as nice as could be imagined for a coin that falls barely short of Mint State.

This is the more often encountered of the two varieties of this issue, with the reverse dies differentiated by the positioning of the second line of the central inscription. According to Kagin and McCarthy, "the Kagin-12a is the most plentiful 1852 U.S. Assay Office issue, with approximately 200 examples known in private hands, 95 of which were recovered from the S.S. Central America." The elite aesthetic appeal and state of preservation seen here surpass most examples, even some graded higher.

This is the sole AU-58+ certified by PCGS, thus the only PCGS AU-58+ with a CAC sticker as well. We haven't sold a higher graded example since March 2012.
