Lot Description

The 1876-CC double eagle has a mintage of 138,441 pieces and numerous examples were sent overseas in banking transactions. We estimate 300 to 400 or slightly more Mint State examples exist, although Rusty Goe (2020) takes a more conservative view with only 175 to 275 Uncirculated coins extant. Regardless of exactly how many examples are extant, the 1876-CC is one of the more readily obtainable Carson City Mint double eagles in the lower Mint State grades, and it is consequently popular with mintmarked type collectors as well as series specialists. The offered coin will tempt bidders with its frosty honey-orange surfaces and overall bold striking detail.
