로트 설명

BB Die State III. A memorable example of this classic early U.S. Mint dollar design type. The obverse is warmly toned in a gently mottling of heather, olive and antique silver hues. Similar colors are seen on the reverse, which is a bit lighter in the center, yet more vividly toned at the upper and lower borders in splashes of reddish-apricot and steel-blue. Much frosty luster remains to surfaces that are well composed in the absence of detracting marks. The strike is a tad soft at the upper obverse and lower reverse borders, to no detriment since it is razor sharp to full elsewhere.<p>Attractive for type purposes, Bowers-Borckardt 158 is one of the more readily obtainable die varieties of the 1799 silver dollar issue. A number of Mint State examples are known (the 2013 edition of Q. David Bowers' early dollar encyclopedia lists nine coins in grades from MS-60 to MS-64+), but as with all early dollar die pairings the 1799 BB-158 is clearly very rare at that level. The present example is nearly as rare as the Mint State pieces, what with uncommonly well preserved surfaces and CAC approval at the certified AU-58 level. It is a noteworthy early dollar that is sure to sell for a nice premium.
