- Iridescent orange-apricot highlights drift over both sides of this predominantly golden-wheat example. Sharply struck and highly lustrous, this charming Choice Mint State coin would serve as a highlight in an advanced three-dollar gold set.
Although introduced in 1854, the usefulness of the three-dollar gold denomination - such as it ever was - had already passed by the time the calendar advanced to 1859. As such, it should come as no surprise to read that the Philadelphia Mint achieved a scant mintage of just 15,589 circulation strikes in the latter year. Unlike many post-Civil War era issues in this series, which are just as obtainable in Mint State as they are in circulated grades (if not even more so), the 1859 was largely overlooked by contemporary Americans who were just starting to realize the joys of numismatics as a hobby. Whereas upwards of 625 coins are believed extant in worn condition, Q. David Bowers and Doug Winter account for fewer than 100 Mint State survivors of the 1859 in their 2005 reference The United States $3 Gold Pieces: 1854-1889. That offered here is one of the very finest, a near-Gem Uncirculated coin with superior technical quality, strong originality, and outstanding visual appeal. Sure to sell for a strong premium.
