Lot Description
(t) CHINA. Tibet. Tangka, ND (1907-12). PCGS MS-62 Gold Shield. L&M-628; KM-Y-F13.1; Rhodes-F(vi). Variety with 12mm inner circle. Fully struck with a few hints of luster, some tiny spots of verdigris. An often misunderstood issue, there are three major varieties encountered for this Tangka issue (5-6 grams in weight). 1) Rhodes-F(vi): Struck using a screw press with a large circle (12mm) around the lotus flower (the specimen above). 2) Rhodes-F(vii): Likely struck using a screw press. The circle around the lotus flower is smaller and the style is slightly finer. Beads around the border range from 61 to 85. 3) Machine-Struck Rhodes-F(vi): A very rare variety of which around 7 specimens are known. There are 56 obverse beads and 57 reverse beads on this issue. cf. ANS # 1973.217.36; British Museum # 1989,0904.274. Estimate: $200 - $300.
