Tompkins Die Stage 2/4, Rea et al. Die State c. Warmly toned in a blend of steel-gray and pewter-lilac with slight mottling to the colors evident in and around the centers. Softly struck though the centers, typical of this die pairing, yet with generally bolder detail toward the borders. Subtle hints of softly frosted luster remain on surfaces that show no sizeable or otherwise singularly mentionable marks.<p>This is the most readily obtainable die marriage of the 1806-dated quarter issue, its obverse shared with the 1806 B-2, and its reverse shared with the 1806 B-4. While it is understandably popular for type purposes, the Browning-3 includes a late state remarriage that also makes it desirable to early quarter variety enthusiasts. The present example represents an earlier die state, without damage within the lower left portion of the shield on the reverse, and it was struck before the reverse die was employed in the 1806 B-4 pairing.<p><strong>Steve M. Tompkins Commentary:</strong> This die marriage is notorious for being weakly struck, however the originality of this coin comes booming through the deep toning. Deserving of a higher grade, but held back due to the strike.
