Lot Description

Though the Whitman colonial coin <em>Encyclopedia</em> suggests that the vast majority of Newman 4-E specimens are restrikes, we believe this particular specimen to be an original, an attribution with which PCGS has concurred based on its assignment of coin #49. Generally pewter gray surfaces retain appreciable bright silver color in the protected areas around many of the motifs. The obverse is off center with the lower border beyond the planchet, reverse better centered, the entire design on both sides fully appreciable. The surfaces are a tad rough overall, but remain remarkably smooth in-hand with none of the heavy pesting or detracting pitting often associated with the type; there are also no significant marks.
