Lot Description

Softly struck in the centers, typical of this die pairing, although all major design elements are bold and fully appreciable. Accuracy compels us to mention some glossiness to the texture, the surfaces otherwise well composed for the grade with iridescent rose-russet patina at the borders. LM-2 is one of two die marriages of the 1797 16 Stars Guide Book variety, and it is marginally less rare than LM-3. This issue as a whole can be elusive from a market availability standpoint, however, survivors legitimately scarce in an absolute sense and enjoying strong collector demand given the brevity of the Draped Bust, Small Eagle half dime type of 1796 to 1797.
The Generation 3.0 PCGS insert uses coin #4258, which is not reserved for the 15 Stars Guide Book variety of the 1797 half dime.
