The obverse and reverse designs are the same that the Mint used to strike regular issue 1876 Liberty Head quarter eagles. Saul Teichman's research published at the uspatterns.com website confirms that only three examples of Judd-1480 are known. That offered here is undeniably the finest, surpassing the PCGS Proof-64+ RB from our June 2013 sale of the Linnemann Family Collection, and the cleaned and hairlined Farouk coin, now in a PCGS roof-60 RB holder, and last sold at auction in Heritage's August 1996 ANA sale. Both sides of this lovely Gem retain abundant pinkish-orange mint color with handsome overlying toning in olive-brown and copper-rose iridescence. A few light carbon spots on the obverse preclude an even higher numeric grade, one below the digit 8 in the date the most useful for provenance purposes. There are no distracting marks, the strike is full, and the finish is modestly cameoed to further enhance the eye appeal.
This is a rare date among Philadelphia Mint quarter eagles, the mintage in gold limited to just 45 Proofs and 4,176 circulation strikes. The copper strikes, although traditionally cataloged as regular dies trial strikes, "were actually deliberately struck for sale to collectors as part of complete off-metal sets" (per the uspatterns.com website). Even rarer than the regular issue gold coins, this Judd-4180 in copper would do equally well in a dedicated pattern set or advanced collection of Liberty Head quarter eagles.
