Lot Description

A vivid piece, this near-Mint Charlotte quarter eagle is bathed in deep honey-olive color with enhancing reddish-rose iridescence. Handling marks are mostly small, wispy and easily overlooked in most viewing situations. Central high points are typically soft, but the detail is considerably bolder toward the borders. Produced to the extent of just 3,677 pieces, the 1855-C is the second-rarest Charlotte Mint two-and-a-half in terms of total number of coins believed extant (this ranking is per Doug Winter, Gold Coins of the Charlotte Mint: 1838-1861, 2008 edition).
